Herschel detection of hydrogen recombination laser lines in the planetary nebula Menzel 3

In this colloquium, I will discuss the recent detection of HI recombination laser lines in the spectrum of the planetary nebula Menzel 3 (Mz 3).  This object was observed as part of the Herschel Planetary Nebula Survey (HerPlaNS), which used the Herschel Space Observatory to study a sample of planetary nebulae. Inspection of the spectrum reveals the presence of 12 HRLs in the 55–680 microns range covered by the PACS and SPIRE instruments. The presence of HI recombination lines in this range is very unusual for PNe and our analysis suggests that they are enhanced by laser effect occurring in the core of Mz 3. I will present our arguments for such conclusion.
