The relationship between atomic and molecular gas in the Milky Way galaxy

Abstract:

How molecular clouds form from atomic interstellar medium in galaxies is important for both understanding the evolution of galaxies, and for understanding star formation. In this presentation I will discuss how the G333 and Vela C molecular clouds are related to the larger Galactic environment, discussing the transition from atomic to molecular gas, and how the energy flow during this transition may drive turbulence at smaller scales within molecular clouds. I will also discuss how different molecular and atomic tracers can help us disentangle different physical parcels of gas along our line of sight.
