Systems Engineering and the extremely large telescopes

The development of innovative scientific instrumentation has a number of challenges, involving its design, construction and long-term operation. Astronomy is no exception. An important tool for the development of the next generation of extremely large telescopes is the System Engineering (SE).
In this seminar I will introduce what is SE, and how it is proposed for the GMT project. In more detail, I will present the application of SE to the first generation multi-object spectrograph, GMACS. And, from a broader perspective, how SE methods can assist the development of complex projects to maximize their scientific potential.
