The ASTRI Mini-Array gamma-ray experiment at the Observatorio del Teide, Tenerife

The ASTRI Mini-Array is a gamma-ray experiment led by INAF with the partnership of the Instituto de Astrofisica de Canarias, Fundacion Galileo Galilei, Universidade de São Paulo (Brazil) and North-West University (S.A). It is implemented at the Observatorio del Teide in the Canary Tenerife island. It features nine identical Cherenkov dual-mirror aplanatic telescopes positioned at 160m +/- 15 m from each other. Thanks to their unprecedented field-of-view (10.5 deg) and the large distance among the telescopes, the mini-array will allow us to observe the gamma-ray sky from a few up to a few hundred TeVs with high flux sensitivity and enhanced angular resolution. The curved focal camera is covered with SiPM sensors and fast front-end electronics. The control software will allow us to control the ASTRI mini-array remotely, while a dedicated off-site Data Center in Italy will process the data every night. The ASTRI MA represents a pivotal instrument for achieving groundbreaking results in the freshly opened field of high-energy astrophysics. In this contribution, the project status and the expected performance of the ASTRI Mini-Array will be presented and discussed.
Giovanni Pareschi, INAF Director of Research (Senior Research Fellow), obtained the PhD in Physics at the University of Ferrara, Italy (1996). He has been the Director of the Brera Observatory from 2008 to 2014. His field of interest mainly concerns technological applications and the development of instrumentation for space and ground based telescopes, an area in which he collaborates with the most important national and international agencies and institutes including ASI, ESA , ESO, NASA and JAXA, MPE, Harvard-Smithsonian CfA, DESY. He currently leads the participation of the National Institute of Astrophysics in the international Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory (CTAO) project and is Principal investigator of the MUR ASTRI program (Astrophysics with Italian Replicating Technology Mirrors), is co-chair of the Telescope Working Group of the ESA mission ATHENA "large" class dedicated to X-ray astronomy. Dr. Pareschi is a member of several international committees. In 2020 he has been appointed by the INAF President to coordinate national research and development activities within INAF against the COVID19 pandemic.
