Understanding the Rare Activity Phase of the Candidate binary Black Hole Blazar OJ 287

Under the currently accepted cold dark matter Cosmological evolution scenario, binary supermassive black hole (SMBH) systems are expected yet only a few potential candidates exist as of now. The BL Lacertae blazar OJ 287 is one such potential system claimed to host a binary SMBH based on a recurrent, double-peaked optical outburst every ~12 years. In this talk, I will discuss our finding of a new, completely unexpected multi-wavelength activity phase, very different from the reported behavior of OJ 287 activity and also contrary to the current understanding of BL Lac sources during and after its latest outburst associated with this ~12-yr activity. We will discuss the implications of these results on currently existing models for this ~12-yr periodic outbursts as well as accretion and jet physics.
