The Multi-Wavelength SDSS Stripe 82 Region: Gravitational Lensing and Beyond

Martin Markler

The so-called SDSS Stripe 82 (S82) region has an impressive array of multi-wavelength data spanning from x-rays to radio and is emerging as a “deep extragalactic survey field”, a precursor to future datasets, with a rich potential for both astrophysics and cosmology. In this colloquium we focus on the CFHT Stripe-82 survey (CS82), the “lensing survey” in S82, which imaged 170 sq-deg with an excellent seeing (FWHM~ 0.65”) down to i_AB = 24. We will review the main results from CS82 so far and, in particular, the search and modeling of strong lensing systems. This project has a strong Brazilian participation, with the national group being responsible for the data processing from the detection catalogs to the PSF modeling and object model-fitting, distributing the data, and hosting the collaborative tools used by the team. Another project with strong Brazilian participation is the VISTA-CFHT Stripe-82 survey, the NIR counterpart of CS82, which will also be reviewed. In addition, we discuss the Stripe 82 X-ray survey carried out with XMM-Newton and Chandra and the Spitzer IRAC Equatorial Survey (SpIES), the largest Spitzer survey so far, which were recently competed. We hope to promote a wider involvement both in using the S82 data available and continuing to target this region.
