The interaction of extragalactic jets with obstacles

The central regions of galaxies are complex environments, rich in stars, dust, gas, clouds, and supernova remnants. For galaxies hosting an active galactic nucleus (AGN) with jets, it is very likely that the jets, in their propagation, interact with the different obstacles present in the galaxy hosts. These interactions can affect the jet dynamically, since the jet is mass-loaded and  decelerated by the encounters. In addition, the presence of obstacles inside the jet can also lead to the generation of high-energy emission, as the result of non-thermal particles accelerated in shocks. In this talk, I will describe different scenarios of jet+obstacles collisions that could result in both transient events and steady radiation.
