Resumo

The transition between continental and oceanic lithosphere generally presents an expressive variation in lithospheric thickness that can induce edge-driven convection in the asthenospheric mantle. Depending on the vigor of the convection and the rheological behavior of the mantle, part of the base of the continental lithosphere can be eroded and transported hundreds of kilometers by convective cells. Based on numerical models to simulate the convective dynamics of the mantle, I studied in which conditions the mantle of the continental lithosphere is eroded and incorporated into the asthenosphere. I concluded that the erosion of the lithospheric root is intermittent and essentially depends on the asthenospheric and lithospheric viscosity. This study can contribute to the understanding of chemical signature of intraplate magmatism and the stability of continental lithosphere.
