The LSST Era of Solar System science
a talk by Pedro Henrique Bernardinelli (IAG-USP/Brasil) - In-Person
Abstract:
"Later this year, the Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) will start its operations, with a goal to map the sky in the Southern hemisphere repeatedly for the next 10 years. For Solar System science, the LSST will be revolutionary, leading to a never seen before increase in the total number of known objects and data availability. In this talk, I will present detailed forecasts of each individual Solar System population and early experiments conducted with LSST commissioning data (that will eventually become the Data Preview 2), such as early discoveries and data characterization from the Science Validation survey, and two targeted and unique experiments: a characterization of the third interstellar object 3I/ATLAS with engineering Rubin data and a search for a new mission target for the NASA New Horizons probe (currently 65 au away from the Sun), as well as some perspectives for the next 10 years."
