Bachelor's Degree in Geophysics
Bachelor's Degree in Geophysics
A geophysicist is a professional capable of collecting, analyzing, and interpreting information from physical fields to explore environmental issues, mineral resources, and the dynamics of Earth and other planets.
What is Geophysics?
Geophysics studies the physical properties of the Earth using physical methods related to heat, magnetism, radioactivity, gravity, electricity, and the propagation of elastic waves to investigate the interior of the Earth, from the most superficial layers — where mineral resources (oil, minerals, water) are located — to the deepest parts of our planet, known solely through geophysical information.
About the course
Introductory courses on Geophysics are offered in the first semesters, but the curriculum also includes strong components in Physics, Mathematics, and Computing. Classes are held at IAG as well as in other institutes of USP, such as Institute of Physics (Instituto de Física - IF), Institute of Mathematics and Statistics (Instituto de Matemática e Estatística - IME), and the Institute of Geosciences (Instituto de Geociências - IGc). The training of a geophysicist at IAG includes practical activities in field and laboratory.
Geophysics classes are offered during the daytime. In addition to the mandatory courses, students must also take elective courses, which may be scheduled at various times.
The ideal duration of the course is ten curricular semesters and it must be completed within a maximum of 16 curricular semesters.
Career Opportunities and Labour Market
Currently, there is a high demand for geophysics professionals in Brazil and worldwide, especially related to the exploration of resources such as oil, gas, minerals, and water.
