SEMINAR OF THE DEPARTMENT OF ASTRONOMY

What do we talk about when we talk about AI: An Astronomy Perspective

a talk by Rafael S. de Souza (University of Hertfordshire) - In-Person

Abstract:

We explore the historical development and future potential of AI in astronomy. From the early use of neural networks to the current era of generative models, AI has continually transformed how we process and interpret astronomical data. Looking ahead, we advocate for the use of  foundation models fine-tuned for astronomy, leveraging rich multimodal datasets.

Short-Bio:

Rafael S. de Souza is a Senior Lecturer in Data Science at the University of Hertfordshire, UK. He holds a Ph.D. in Astrophysics from USP and has conducted research at institutions including the Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics (Germany), the Kavli Institute for the Physics and Mathematics of the Universe (Japan), Eötvös Loránd University (Hungary), the Korean Astronomy and Space Science Institute (South Korea), the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (USA), and the Shanghai Astronomical Observatory (China). Rafael is the author of Bayesian Models for Astrophysical Data, which won the Prose Award for Best Book in Astronomy and Cosmology. He also founded and chairs the Cosmostatistics Initiative (COIN), promoting interdisciplinary research in astrophysics, statistics, and data science.
